Tear tester

Internal Tearing Resistance of Paper
This method measures the force perpendicular to the plane of the paper required to tear multiple sheets of paper through a specified distance after the tear has been started using an Elmendorf type tearing tester. The measured results can be used to calculate the approximate tearing resistance of a single sheet.
When paper is subjected to high stresses in converting machine operation and handling equipment, good tearing resistance is very important. Also to achieve a higher puncture resistance result of the board, a higher tearing of the paper is desired.
One or more sheets of the sample material are torn through a fixed distance by means of the pendulum of an Elmendorf type tearing tester. The work done in tearing is measured by the loss in potential energy of the pendulum. The instrument scale is calibrated to indicate the average force exerted when a certain number of plies are torn together (work done divided by the total distance torn).
Tearing Resistance Tester using Elmendorf principle consists of a pendulum with graduated scale, a stationary clamp and a movable clampcarried on the pendulum formed by a sector of a circle for free swing on a ball bearing, a knife mounted on a stationary post for starting the tear, two leveling bolts, means for holding the pendulum in a raised position and for releasing it instantaneously, and a pointer for registering a maximum arc when the pendulum swings when released.

Compression tester

Box Compression Test
Container Compression Tester is an efficient and easy to use equipment intended for measuring the ability of Corrugated or Solid fiber shipping containers to resist external compressive forces. This method describes how to determine the resistance of a fiberboard shipping container to compressive forces. This is accomplished by placing the container between two flat platens, one of which is mechanically driven to compress the box. A recording device is incorporated to indicate the force and deformation (deflection) required to compress the container.MEASURING UNIT : Breaking force in Kgf, Lbf and N.

The compressive forces are related to some of those exerted on containers in stack or encountered in transportation. The method is used to compare the compressive resistance of diffrent lots of similar boxes or to compare boxes of diffrent grades. It may also be used to compare the compression characteristics of boxes differing in design or construction. In addition the information gained may be used to provide an indication of the load that a particular container may be able to withstand in service.
Box Compression Tester consists of a two parallel platens. A test piece is placed in the centre of the lower platen. By pushing a button, the upper platen applies a load on the test piece. The speed of the platen is fixed and confirms to all relevent and applicable standards. the upper platen returns to its home position when the box has lost its strength. The force and deflectionduring the test is digitally recorded and diplayed.

Cobb Sizing Test for Liquid Absorption
The test is used for determining liquid absorptiveness or resilience of treated and untreated papers, boards, fabrics and other sheet materials. The test consists of a test apparatus, its 10-kg roller and blotting paper. The roller method is recommended to insure better consistency and reliability that can be obtained by manual blotting or rubbing the specimen.
Water absorptiveness of paper board or other materials is a function of various characteristics such as sizing, porosity, etc. The Cobb sizing test can be used to test absorption or resistance to absorption of water, oil and other liquids. On Corrugation : The absorption capacity of corrugating medium has to be controlled in order that it has the proper receptivity to the corrugating adhesive, which is an aqueous suspension of starch, for proper adhesion in the corrugating process. Also a lower Cobb represents superior resistance to humidity changes and hence takes higher time to change to atmospheric moisture.
This procedure determines the quantity of water absorbed by a sample of paper or other sheet material in a specified time and under standardized conditions. Other liquids such as ink, beverages, oil and water based solutions may be used instead of water. The standard area is one hundred square centimeters (cm2), into which 100cc of liquid are poured to reach a specific height of 1 cm.
Cobb Sizing Tester consists of a hollow metal cylinder or ring (100, 25 or 10 cm2 inside area); a rubberized base plate with a clamping device to hold the ring against the sample. A pressure adjusting handle is located on the clamping device to seal off the cylinder when testing uneven materials where an unjacketed seal is difficult to maintain. A critical component of this test is a solid stainless steel roller having a smooth face 20cm wide and weighing 10.0+ 0.5kg.Also required for the test is a 100ml graduated cylinder, a balance with sensitivity of 0.01g or better, blotting paper and a timer / stopwatch.
